National Identity Complexities: Genesis of Russian-Ukraine Conflict
Subhash B

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has dealt another blow to the world which was slowly recovering from the impact of Covid-19. Global economies were just beginning to make a turnaround, hoping to recover from supply chain disruptions and boost trade activities. However, the Ukraine crisis dealt a blow to trade activities by creating a food and energy crisis. Moreover, this war has put more pressure on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and European economies, especially Germany, which are majorly dependent on Russian supplies of gas and oil. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the genesis of the Russia-Ukraine crisis from the question of national identity complexities in Ukraine's nation-building process. It covers all the major events in the bilateral relations between Russia and Ukraine until invasion and provides an in-depth analysis of what led to this impasse. Full Article..

Projections for Poverty Elimination in India with Some Assumptions: Impact of Inequality
Kishore G Kulkarni, P Nandakumar Warrier and Rebecca Stephan

The paper studies the relationship between poverty levels, per capita incomes and inequality by using a large sample of low and middle-income nations. The results, which indicate the requirement of a per capita income that is close to the one currently registered in Mexico for poverty removal, are used to predict the year of the "happy event" of poverty eradication in India. The tentative finding is that the portals to a better material life for the people of India may gradually open only in the early 2040. It is also observed that some countries like Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have succeeded in poverty removal at low per capita income levels, which may be attributed to greater success in removing inequality and to praiseworthy performance in the realm of non-monetary indicators of poverty. The paper is, of course, based on some important rational assumptions such as absence of any other major shock such as Covid-19, and the continuous average increase in India's GDP by 8%. Therefore, this is an exercise in rationality with the absence of major external positive or negative shocks. Full Article..

Tax Obedience in Covid-19 Times: The Case of Israel
Nellie Munin and Karnit Malka-Tiv

Across the world, economic crises present major challenges for governments. In particular, tax agencies encounter emerging compliance problems which in turn adversely affect the economy. In this context, this study aims to explore Israeli taxpayers' willingness to pay tax in the short term, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Responses to an anonymous questionnaire reflect a statistically significant correlation between the unwillingness to pay tax and the economic crisis emanating from Covid-19, stronger among citizens who usually avoid paying taxes than those who are usually prompt. It further reflects a link between the willingness to pay taxes and credit shortage, and also that government's reluctance to help the business community during the crisis may reinforce tax avoidance.
